Residents and Businesses Can Save Thousands Through Education
and Incentive Programs
Delawareans can soon save thousands on their energy bills through a
one-stop resource providing low- and no-cost steps to save money, create
jobs and improve the environment. The Delaware Sustainable Energy
Utility (SEU) launched the new “Energize
Delaware” campaign to help residents improve the efficiency
of their homes and businesses and tap new clean energy sources. New
research commissioned by the SEU points the way to the most effective
payoffs: educating the public and targeting actions toward the biggest
return on investment.
“Sustainable energy is the largest, cheapest, cleanest way to save money and create in-state jobs,” said Sen. Harris McDowell, whose legislation created the Sustainable Energy Utility (SEU). “A tough economy is exactly the right time to take aggressive action toward a sustainable
energy future, and everyone can reap the benefits. Through the SEU’s
Energize Delaware Program, we can be a model for the rest of the nation and
world to follow.”
Starting September 2009, Energize Delaware, an initiative of the
non-profit Sustainable Energy Utility (SEU) will provide
businesses and residents financial incentives and an online
toolbox that provides information and guidance to help Delawareans
achieve the biggest return on investment for their energy dollars.
Programs to be launched throughout the Fall of 2009 will include:
ENERGY STAR® Appliance Rebates,
Commercial/Industrial Lighting, Renewable Energy Grants,
Sustainable Communities Initiative and a
Comprehensive Home Performance Initiative.

Sprint, Samsung launch biodegradable
phone
$50 'eco-conscious' phone built with a casing of biodegradable
plastic
NEW YORK - Sprint and Samsung are selling a $50 "eco-conscious" phone
with a casing of biodegradable plastic.
Several manufacturers have made "green" phones, but they have generally
been barebones devices, like the Motorola Renew carried by T-Mobile USA.
The new Samsung Reclaim has a slide-out standard-layout keyboard,
e-mail and Web access, a camera and GPS navigation.
The plastic of the casing is 40 percent corn-based. The phone's charger
lights up when the phone is fully charged, to remind the owner to unplug it
to save electricity.
David Owens, Sprint Nextel Corp.'s director of product marketing,
said the company is paying more than the usual amount of subsidies to
Samsung to bring the price down to $49.99 for customers signing two-year
contracts.
"We took a big step to put it under

Americans Waste $130 Billion a Year on Energy
Our houses leak, our light bulbs produce
more heat than illumination, our big screen TV sets draw power
when they are turned off, and that’s just the start of it.
U.S. businesses and individuals could save money, curb
emissions of global warming pollutants, reduce our dependence
on foreign oil and cut energy consumption by 23 percent by 2020,
merely by taking sensible, practical steps to use energy more
efficiently, says a report from McKinsey & Company released
today.
What's more, energy efficiency is the very best way to create
so-called green jobs -- yes, even better than subsidizing solar
or wind power -- because it makes the economy more productive in
the long run.
So what’s standing in the way?
Unfortunately, there are lots of barriers to more efficiency
-- some structural, some behavioral
and some stemming from a lack of access to capital–and so there is no
simple or single program that will get us where we need to go,
according to Ken Ostrowski, a senior partner at McKinsey who led
the effort behind the report, called "Unlocking
Energy Efficiency in the U.S. Economy." Indeed, that’s part
of the problem. For a variety of reasons, market forces on their own
don’t work very well when it comes to energy efficiency.
"Energy efficiency, by its nature, is quite challenging to
capture,"

Eco-dating -- the new way to meet green
singles!
By Julie K.
I’ve learned a lot about organic food, organic farming, sustainability, energy efficiency, and going green. This has been my passion for the last 8 years, and I have continuously expanded my knowledge on these green topics. Since I’ve made this such a big part of my life, I want to find a mate who shares at least some of these same ideals and values.
I also think there is a misconception about people who want to “save the planet”. We’re not all stereotypical hippies who don’t shower and smoke who knows what for fun :) We’re just normal people who want to make a conscious effort to lessen our impact on the planet. I really think there is a need for a green singles community out there, and I am going to make it happen. I came up with the idea of eco-dating: a gathering where single, like-minded individuals can get together to see if there is a green spark or two. ...continued
