DNREC Seeks Volunteers For Inland Bays Cleanup on June 25

DNREC Public Affairs

DNREC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Section, along with the Enforcement Section volunteers, the Center for the Inland Bays and the Division of Parks and Recreation are seeking volunteers for the 7th Annual Cleanup of the Inland Bays on Saturday, June 25 from 9 AM to 2 PM.

This year the cleanup will once again concentrate on 2 locations. The northern group will meet at the Massey's Landing Public Boat Ramp at the end of Long Neck Road and concentrate on the Rehoboth Bay and Indian River Bay areas.

The southern group will meet at the Mulberry Landing Public Boat Ramp at the Assawoman Wildlife Area just southwest of Bethany Beach.

A number of local businesses are donating money, food and equipment such as dumpsters. Volunteers who can bring shallow draft boats are also encouraged to take part.    READ MORE

EPA Study Finds Where You Live Matters More Than How You Live

Treehugger - Lloyd Alter

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirms in a new study prepared with the Jonathan Rose Companies that a home's location and access to transit -- in other words, its location efficiency -- are as important to reducing energy use as are energy-efficiency measures in homes and cars.

It also confirms the importance of housing type- that the single family home is an energy hog compared to row housing or multi-family housing. READ MORE

DNREC's Division of Parks & Recreation Kicks Off the "Great Parks Pursuit"

DNREC Public Affairs

Delaware State Parks has launched its "Great Parks Pursuit."  The program, which kicked-off on May 15, is similar to a scavenger hunt and is designed to get children and their families outdoors, enjoying healthy activities in Delaware State Parks.

Participants complete activities to be eligible for prizes.  There are 35 activities available throughout the state park system.

The activities include walking a portion of the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail in New Castle County or the Junction & Breakwater Trail in Sussex County, playing disc golf at various parks, fishing, participating in a nature program, camping in one of the state park campgrounds, boating, rock climbing and much more.

The activities completed by a family are recorded on the Great Parks Pursuit game card.  The more activities completed, the better the prize. READ MORE

"I like to compare this picture to the story of the snake biting its own tail. That red fella is an obvious symbol of humanity. It is too late to look for the people to blame. We're all in this together."

TAKE ACTION

Tell the Senate to Eliminate Oil and Gas Subsidies

The Wilderness Society

The Senate vote to eliminate billions in taxpayer subsidies to Big Oil failed by just four votes. While the majority of the Senate supports the bill, Big Oil's cronies in the Senate used the oldest tactic in the book; they filibustered the bill and prevented it from being voted on in an up or down vote.

Angry that Big Oil is still getting federal subsidies while raking in billions in profits? Speak up and call your Senators this week in district offices and tell them to cut out the handout to Big Oil.  Congress must put America on the path to a more secure, clean energy future. Cutting subsidies is one of the first steps.

The Senate is on recess this week, and one of the best ways to communicate is by calling your Senators in their district offices.  The Wilderness Society has provided a link to look up phone numbers, and talking points to deliver.   If you absolutely cannot call, send an email message.  Help lead the fight for reform.

Former State Representative Pamela Thornburg receives Legislative Award from Delaware Association of Conservation Districts

DNREC Public Affairs

The Delaware Association of Conservation Districts (DACD) on March 30 presented former State Representative Pamela Thornburg with the Association’s Legislative Award, which is presented annually to a legislator for outstanding service, loyalty and devotion to conservation efforts in the state of Delaware. Rep. Thornburg was a member of the House of Representatives from 2000 - 2010.

Rep. Thornburg chaired the Tax Ditch Right-of-Way Task Force that led to House Bill 452, an Act to amend Title 7 of the Delaware Code relating to tax ditches.  The Bill clarifies the reduction in the tax ditch right-of-way and defines construction, major maintenance and minor maintenance rights-of-way.  READ MORE

NUCLEAR POWER

If Germany Can Get Rid of Nuclear Power, Why Can't the US?

Beyond Nuclear

Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, will be in Washington DC next week to meet with President Obama.  But she won’t be talking to him about Germany’s bold decision to shut all 17 of its nuclear power plants by 2022 and create an 80% renewable energy program by 2050.

Meanwhile, the U.S. clings on to antiquated nuclear power technology, insisting on wildly expensive new nuclear plants and prolonging the operating lives of its dangerous old ones.

Our Senators and Representative should be standing up for our safety. That means supporting a moratorium on operating licenses at the country’s most dangerous Fukushima-style reactors; an end to license extensions for deteriorating old reactors; and a halt to subsidies and licenses for proposed reactors.

To take action follow this link and send your elected officials Beyond Nuclear’s new ad.
