DNREC Mosquito Control Urges Citizens to Help Keep Mosquito Populations DownDNREC Public Affairs In Delaware the Asian Tiger mosquito is an aggressive daytime biter distinguished by its silver or white stripes on a black body - and by the extremely large, itchy, long-lasting welts it leaves, according to Tom Moran, Mosquito Control Section regional manager. "Asian Tiger mosquitoes breed in tarps, flower pots, boats, non-functioning swimming pools, rain gutters - anything around your yard that can collect water. These nuisance mosquitoes don't fly more than several hundred yards from where they are born, so that means that if you have this type, the source is very likely your yard or one of your immediate neighbors," Moran said. One of the greatest resources that the Mosquito Control Section has to combat mosquitoes is YOU. Just one container that’s holding water can produce thousands of mosquitoes. The best prevention is to eliminate as much standing water from your property as possible and encouraging your neighbors to do the same. READ MORE

Major Greening Renovations Completed in ACME Parking LotDelaware Center for Horticulture The Delaware Center for Horticulture (TheDCH) announced the completion of a stormwater mitigation project at the ACME grocery store in Wilmington’s Trolley Square neighborhood. The 9,000 square foot system captures an estimated 70% of the site’s annual rainfall, providing relief to the city’s combined stormwater and sewer system and helping to preserve the integrity of the region’s drinking water. The landscaping and engineering system is designed to filter, slow and absorb rain that falls on the roof of ACME’s building and 1.42 acre parking lot. It includes 19 large shade trees, more than 2,800 shrubs and smaller perennial plants, a rain garden, and a series of underground holding tanks – while maintaining almost the same number of the parking spaces. Take Action to Help Ban Genetically Engineered SalmonLast week the US House of Representatives barred the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from approving genetically engineered (GE) salmon. This is great news, and a great victory for everyone who's been working to make sure that GE salmon doesn't end up on your plate. Now we need the US Senate to do the same. The House passed a measure as part of the 2012 budget that removes all funding from the Food and Drug Administration for approving GE Salmon. This is what the fighting has been for, and is good news since US food agencies don't have a way to fully evaluate the impacts of GE salmon on human health or the environment. GE salmon was found by the FDA to contain elevated levels of IGF-1, a cancer-causing toxin, but despite this, the FDA has been trying to approve GE salmon for human consumption. Over 100,000 supporters have taken action to prevent the approval of GE salmon! The recent victory is due in large part to their overwhelming public opposition to GE salmon. This victory could be temporary unless the Senate passes the same measure. Please urge your U.S. senator to do the right thing and block the FDA from approving GE salmon.
Tell the EPA to Stop Unlimited Toxic Mercury PollutionLast week, bowing to pressure from big polluters and their allies in congress, the EPA announced that it would extend for 30 days its comment period on the proposed mercury rule, the most important Clean Air Act update in over 20 years. Polluters are doing everything they can to force delay after delay at the EPA - but we can't let them. Mercury pollution in small amounts leads to birth defects, neurological dysfunction and premature death. But every year, coal-fired power plants alone pump nearly 50 tons of this potent neurotoxin into our air. Mercury exposure is so widespread in this country that as many as 1 in 6 women of childbearing age has mercury levels in her blood high enough to put a baby at risk of mercury poisoning. Coal-fired power plants are the biggest source of mercury pollution in this country, yet incredibly, mercury pollution from power plants has been totally unregulated until now. That needs to change, but we'll need a massive show of support for the EPA's rule. Tell the EPA to stop unlimited toxic mercury pollution from power plants. Submit a public comment now. READ MORE
