Hummingbird to Mars

In 1930, Texas Senator Morris Sheppard said : "there is as much chance of repealing the eighteenth amendment as there is for a hummingbird to fly to the planet Mars with the Washington Monument tied to its tail." This quote was the inspiration for the conception of Wilmington's newest watering hole, CR's Hummingbird to Mars.

Long time restaurateur Joe McCoy and mixologist Lo Skarda decided to convert the space above Catherine Rooney's into a modern day "Speakeasy." The goal was to create a gathering place that was conducive to quiet conversation in surroundings that are at once cozy and stimulating, reminiscent of a more genteel era. After much planning and renovations, Hummingbird to Mars has landed and has many unique features, such as an antique lantern from the old Brandywine Raceway which hangs at the obscure entrance and is only lit when they are open, and a claw foot bathtub which is filled with ice and champagne rather than the "bathtub gin" from the prohibition era. The decor is an eclectically enchanting mix of comfy modern chic and authentic Victorian furniture, fixtures and woodwork.

Although it is open to the public, Hummingbird to Mars retains an aura of mystery and privacy. ...continued
