RECYCLING

Introducing Industry Leader
Precision AirConvey
"A Star In our own Backyard"

by Christine K. LaMonica

Have you ever wondered what happens to materials collected for recycling? Do you know what densifiers and repelletizers are? Welcome to Precision AirConvey Corp (PAC.) PAC designs manufactures and installs automated trim and scrap removal systems that captures waste at the source, quietly cuts it into confetti and conveys it directly to a baler, densifier, dumpster or other container for easy recycling or disposal. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Tom Embley, the CEO of PAC and toured their facilities located at 210 Executive Drive, Suite 6, Pencader Corporate Center in Newark.

As is my wont, I asked Tom how he got started. He told me he had been hired right after graduating from U of D with a Mechanical Engineering degree. Fascinated by the processes that were already being used Tom started wondering how they could improve upon them. In what ways could they come up with creative solutions to their customers problem. Tom has always thought outside the box and never been content to simply maintain the status quo. After 8 years of learning the ins and outs of the business,  Tom’s driving force to provide better solutions for customers problems made him decide to strike out on his own. That is when, what was to become The Industry's Leader in the field was born. Tom founded PAC and started exploring ways to turn his clients waste into commodities that would create a revenue stream. ...continued

6 Surprising Facts
About Organic Foods

Organic food continues to show
strong growth, despite a weak economy.
Find out what's behind the label.

Organic food continues to gain market share, despite troubles in the economy as a whole. This is especially true in Europe and in environmentally conscious enclaves like college towns -- but what is perhaps most exciting to some observers is that organic foods have also penetrated much of mainstream culture, appearing in force at major supermarkets, big box retailers and at fast food joints. Most everyone is at least somewhat familiar with the USDA organic label now, but what's really behind that iconic seal?

Here we take a look at some of the myths and surprising facts about organic foods:

1. Organic Isn't Always the Smartest Choice

As food writer Mark Bittman recently wrote in the New York Times, to some, organic "seems to have become the magic cure-all, synonymous with eating well, healthfully, sanely, even ethically." However, according to Bittman, "eating organic offers no guarantee of any of that. And the truth is that most Americans eat so badly -- we get 7% of our calories from soft drinks, more than we do from vegetables; the top food group by caloric intake is 'sweets'; and one-third of [the] nation's adults are now obese."

To some observers, the most eco-friendly, and healthy, option is to eat lower on the food chain, since meat has a disproportionate impact on the planet and can contribute to health problems. Simply eating more plants and whole grains can also be a cheaper option than buying organic foods, which, we know, can often be more expensive than conventional alternatives. Eating less processed and prepared foods, and cooking more at home, can provide similar benefits.

It's also true that an organic label provides no information about where an item was produced, leading some critics to complain that...contintued

 Green Chem Direct
Finding Green Cleaning Solutions

By Christine K. LaMonica

As I take this journey into environmental awareness, I am blessed daily with meeting people whose heads and hearts are (in my humble estimation) in the right place. One such person is Bob Brescia, owner of Green Chem Direct, a company that supplies Green Seal Certified & Eco Logo Certified Cleaning Products. Bob is a kind, gentle man with a lively intellect, a true desire to make a difference and someone who genuinely cares about and actively seeks environmental solutions (no pun intended).

When I asked Bob how he got started he said he sort of “fell into it.” He left the construction business and started working with The Slip Solution, a company that installs non-slip flooring. One of the issues they had was kitchen floor surfaces that were compromised by grease build up. Bob started searching for non-toxic cleaners/de-greasers that were not a health hazard and were environmentally friendly. At a training convention in North Carolina he learned that a lot of products currently used in the US were banned ...continued

Bliss Elements Day Spa
Makes it Big Time in the Big Apple

Bliss Elements Day spa, Delaware's first and only Green Day Spa distinguishes itself again. Not surprisingly, "Team Flagg" has been bestowed an honor never before given to a Delaware Salon and Spa.  They have been invited, not only to exhibit at the industry's largest annual event which is the International Beauty Show being held in NYC on March 7-9, but also to be keynote speakers. They will be hosting two seminars titled "Green is the New Black".

When I first met Sherell and Michael Flagg (Team Flagg) they shared their hope "to be a model for other Green Salons. To teach others what they have learned." My comment then was: "One thing is certain, they are truly on a mission and will continue to live their powerful shared vision." Therefore this well deserved honor comes as no surprise to me. From where I sit they are only being duly recognized for their vision and accomplishments. Thus begins the fruition of part two of their dream ...continued

GREEN BUILDING

Majority of Americans Still in the Dark About Federal Phaseout of Traditional Bulbs

More Americans are buying energy efficient lighting and are aware of the energy-saving benefits -- but most are clueless about the phaseout of incandescent bulbs that starts in two years.

Those are the main findings of a study by GE Lighting, whose research results are similar to those of a study conducted by Osram Sylvania.

GE's research showed that 82 percent of 1,519 homeowners surveyed online said they currently use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) at home  -- though apparently not exclusively because 80 percent said they also use incandescent bulbs.

Fifty-two percent said they plan to buy more CFLs in future and are motivated to do so by energy savings.

Yet about 75 percent said they are not aware of the impending federal requirement for greater energy efficiency that will lead to the phaseout of less efficient lighting. ...continued
