Newark Joins Wilmington
& Dover as Cool Cities

The City of Newark's Mayor and Council voted unanimously Monday, (Feb. 22, 2010) to endorse the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. Newark now joins the ranks of Wilmington and Dover as Delaware's Cool Cities!

"This could not have happened without the patience and dedication of the Sierra Club's Cool Cities volunteers, especially Ron Zink, who made the trek to Newark on numerous occasions to convince them that
this was the right thing to do." said Cool Cities Delaware coordinator Amy Roe, a doctoral student at UofD's Center for Energy and Environmental Policy (CEEP).

Cool Cities is a national initiative that encourages local governments to develop policies and programs that promote energy sustainability, environmental stewardship and climate protection.

A Delaware Greenways and State of Delaware Park Watch Program

The Blue Ball Barn at Alapocas Run State Park , refreshments available

In less than a year, more than 39 volunteers have joined the Northern Delaware Greenway (NDG) Trail Stewards as ambassadors and eyes and ears for the trail’s managing partners.  As they use the trail for their own recreation and pleasure, they greet other trail users, provide information, answer questions, and report on trail usage and safety concerns.  Their enthusiasm is such that they have recently requested an expansion of their role to include opportunities to groom and maintain the Northern Delaware Greenway Trail.   Delaware Greenways and Delaware State Parks responded by organizing the first of seven Trail Maintenance Days dedicated to the NDG Trail.

DNREC’s Environmental Crimes Unit Releases 2009 Enforcement Statistics

Proactive patrols increased 35% safeguarding public health,
safety and the environment

DNREC’s Environmental Protection Officers (EPOs) investigated 3,916 complaints in 2009, covering a wide range of violations and emergencies of Delaware’s air, waste and water that threatened public health, safety and the environment. EPOs are sworn police officers who enforce environmental laws, investigate violations and prosecute environmental crimes.

Officers on patrol handled 1,045 proactive pollution checks – a 35 percent increase over 2008. Water pollution discharges from residential, municipal and industrial sources represented the greatest number of complaints, a total of 545, followed by open burning (523) and illegal dumping (472).

“Over the past year, our department has stepped up efforts, and we are extremely proud of our hard working officers who dedicate themselves to protecting our environment and enforcing our laws,” said Secretary Collin O’Mara.

EPOs also responded to individual complaints that included:

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Union City Grille
Great Food at Honest Prices

by Christine K. LaMonica

This week I finally visited the Union City Grille Restaurant, located at 8th and Union in Little Italy. I kept hearing accolades from various friends and acquaintances and decided it was past time to see for myself.

The first thing that struck me was the welcoming comfortable atmosphere. The decor is a subtle mix of classic casual comfort and Feng Shui with lots of rich wood and amply cushioned seating. To me, comfortable seating can make or break my overall dining experience. One of many little nuances that immediately caught my eye was the wooden pepper and salt grinders on all of the tables. In my opinion, thoughtful touches that show appreciation for an individual diners palate are noteworthy.

I asked owner/chef Matthew Curtis what he most wanted to convey to people about Union City Grille. His initial response was simply "honesty". At first, I wasn't quite sure what he was getting at, but during the course of our conversation as he talked about the decisions he made, I understood.

I always like to get what I refer to as the "back story" of any business I write about. To that end, one of the broad stroke questions I often ask is "If I had a magic wand and could grant you 3 wishes what would they be?" He answered  ...continued
