COMMUNITY

Delaware City Environmental Coalition Seeks Volunteers to Assist with Health Surveys

Delaware City is a located on the Delaware River in New Castle County. Delaware City is the gateway to many natural treasures, such as the Delaware Estuary marshes and the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. Due to its ideal location on the river, Delaware City has historically been the site of many activities including heavy industry.

Delaware City Environmental Coalition (DCEC), is a newly formed coalition, made up of a group of environmentally conscious residents. DCEC’s goal is to learn more about our air, water, soil and living spaces to help improve the lives of those who live in areas where these basic elements may have been disrupted.

Governor Markell Signs "Vulnerable Users" Law

Surrounded by bicycle advocates and enthusiasts at Paper Mill Road Park on August 12, Governor Jack Markell signed into law Senate Bill 269, which amends Delaware's careless or inattentive driving law and increases penalties for drivers convicted of inattentive or careless driving that results in the injury of a "vulnerable user" of the state's roads.  A "vulnerable user" includes pedestrians, including those who work on the road (construction or utility), cyclists, skateboarders, those on roller skates or inline skates, scooters, mopeds, motorcycles, farm tractors or similar farm vehicles and those riding on animals.

Delaware courts can now impose ...continued

GARDENING  & LANDSCAPING

Self-Seeding Crops You’ll
Never Need to Replant

Manage these vigorous self-seeders so you’ll never have to buy seeds again.

Letting crops flower and go to seed also
supports beneficial insects!
ILLUSTRATION: ELAYNE SEARS

One of the characteristics of a truly sustainable garden is that it produces at least some of its own seed. This is most often done when gardeners select, harvest and store seeds until the proper time for planting the following year. But some self-seeding crops produce seeds so readily that as long as you give them time to flower and mature, and set seed, you will always have free plants growing in your garden. You can simply let the seeds fall ...continued

GREEN DRINKS

Green Drinks at Deep Blue
by Christine K. LaMonica

deepblue.jpg

On Tuesday August 17th Green Drinks will be hosted by Deep Blue Bar and Grill, a seafood restaurant with a very happening bar, located in the downtown area of Wilmington at 111, 11th Street across from Theatre N and one block before the Hotel duPont.

People say that Wilmington closes at 5 o’clock, but over the past few years Deep Blue has proved them wrong. The fore runner of many places that have cropped up downtown over the past few years, Deep Blue is the brain child of Dan Butler AKA The Big Chef Guy who I affectionately call “Wack-a-Doodle".

Dan has a definite method to his madness and a clear and unrelenting passion for fine and affordable cuisine. He also has an uncanny knack for making his establishments feel at once Tres Chic with the ambience of being at friends home.

Join us this Tuesday from 6 to 8PM. Sample the Deep Blue Happy Hour Menu which features $5 appetizers and Drink Specials

GREEN BUILDING

Green Delaware and The Delaware Valley Green Building Council
co-host Green Drinks

dvgbclogo.gifRecently I was contacted by Reid Rowlands, Owner of World Class Supplies and member of the Delaware Chapter of the Delaware Valley Green Building Council in regard to hosting a joint R,S.V. P. Green Drinks event, We agreed that the logical place to hold the event was The U. of D. Courtyard Marriott.

After we had set a tentative date we arranged a meeting with Bill Sullivan the Managing Director and Claudia Scalia the Sales Representative to discuss the details. Our choice of venue was based on the Marriottsʼ Green initiatives.

I later had the opportunity to chat with Bill Sullivan about those initiatives and want to share some of what I learned. Bill told me that he personally values having as little impact on the environment as possible and that he took great pride in show casing to the staff and guests the shared philosophy and beliefs of Marriott and The University of Delaware. The Hotel, which ...continued
